Featured Shoot: The People of FIPPP

When I was approached with the opportunity to capture The Formerly Incarcerated People’s Performance Project (FIPPP) and I learned about their work, it was an obvious yes for me. Their mission: to raise the voices of those that are not traditionally heard to promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity and greater understanding. Specifically, the project, operating out of Oakland, CA, provides a platform for the formerly incarcerated to express their life experiences through live theater performance.

Amazing, right? I had never heard of such an amalgamation of art and the criminal justice system. And while it was one thing to hear about the incredible work of FIPPP, being immersed in their performances was a breathtaking experience.

I got to document the group in rehearsal as they were getting ready to set the stage for their Winter Festival in January. In watching the performers, hearing their stories, and observing the directors coaching with care and passion, I have no doubt their debut will be packed with power.

FIPPP’s Winter Festival will be held at PianoFight in Oakland over two weekends in January with in-person performances and post-show Ask Me Anything panels with the performers.
